September 21, 2013, I visited Whatcom Skillshare Faire at Hovander Homestead
Park, Ferndale. The event was presented by Transition Whatcom. This event was
purposed to provide information and demonstration about skill, crafts, and
knowledge, particularly the things that we could traditionally or creatively do
by ourselves. The host was welcomed to everybody who was willing to show the
skill to other just by signing up beforehand. There were a lot of show over
there such as: archery, wood carving, combing and spinning wool, herbal
medicine distillation, horse whispering, beekeeping, making goat cheese, making
fire from wood, primitive skill medley, and felting soap balls. I learned how
to be a hunter by holding archery. It was not easy at the first time, but
finally I could shoot the bow to the center of target board. Another thing that
I did is combing and spinning wool. Apparently, it was easy to make a wool, but
it took long time. I really enjoyed it. Many visitors tried to do what kind of
skill they want to know. The most crowded place was making fire from wood
friction. It was a young man taught how to make it. My suggestion to Transition
Whatcom is to invite more food and beverage seller because the event was held a
whole day. I am disappointed when I wanted to have a lunch, I just found three
outlets and I didn’t like all of them, so that I had to go outside to find food.
